Principal's Welcome Message

Welcome to Central Elementary!

Central is an elementary building that houses one section of each grade — YK thru 6. We also support one section of Great Start Readiness Preschool, four half-day sections of Early Childhood Special Education, and Treehouse Daycare.

I am a graduate of Hope College, where I focused my studies on biology and secondary education. After leaving Hope, I took additional coursework at Western and at Michigan State in order to earn my teaching credentials in all areas of secondary science. In short, I became a biology major with a chemistry minor. My path to Central took me to 12 years of teaching high school science at Battle Creek Pennfield High School, followed by 5 years as Assistant Principal at Grandville High School, a brief stop as Assistant Principal at Grandville Middle School, and active Director of Student Services at Grandville for approximately 7 years. I have continued taking courses and focused my efforts on expanding my understanding of special education and elementary learning. I received a Master's from Grand Valley State.

I live in Hastings with my husband of 26 years. I have two children. My oldest is in graduate school at U of M. She is studying epidemiology. My youngest is a senior at MSU and he plans to go on to medical school. He hopes to be a surgeon. I love animals — dogs and cows are my favorites. I enjoy being outside, camping, taking photos and doing crafts. My family is the center of my universe. I am blessed to be at Central and love my days with the family here.

At Central we focus on 4 pillars and our work centers around these areas. The pillars are BEING KIND, BEING RESPECTFUL, BEING RESPONSIBLE AND BEING SAFE. In all that we do, we try to model and support these ideas. Each month we celebrate students who have exemplified these traits and celebrate with a recognition assembly and give them a Central Pride t-shirt.

Central is a special place. We are small but we are mighty, and staff are extremely dedicated to the education of ALL students. Central truly feels like a family where we grow and support one another. We are also a top-performing school in the district.

We would love for you to be involved and we certainly welcome you to volunteer and support our efforts in any manner you are able. You can sign up to volunteer for Grandville Public Schools, participate in community groups, or join our PTC organization; contact PTC president Mandy Dobrowolski for information. If you have a strength, skill or passion for something, we certainly welcome you to share your time with us. Call Central at 254-5410 for more information or email me at athornburgh@gpsbulldogs.org so that I can get answers to your specific questions or needs.
